#Railstrike - November 2017

LATEST ON RAILSTRIKE

Pre-rant

It seems that we cannot escape the rail strikes at this moment in time. For the last four years until I graduated university this May, I was a university student in London while still living at home in Crawley. I had to commute to London on a regular basis and let me be the first one to tell you that the British railway system is a bloody joke and I would be the first to support the re-nationalisation of our railway service which was in the Labour Manifesto 2017.

The fares that British commuters pay on a daily basis does not justify the appalling service that we get and I have always believed that railway fares in Britain are extremely unreasonable. I live an estimated 20 minute drive from Brighton and a train fare to Brighton Station from my local station is roughly £15 on-peak and that is extremely ridiculous. East Croydon is 30 minutes away from Three Bridges Station and a return is £7.50 off-peak and I believe £16.50 or more on-peak. Commuters who work in these areas and live in another should not have to folk over large amounts of their paycheck just to get to work on a daily basis. On peak prices are extremely unjust and unfair. Off-peak prices are slightly more reasonable but many commuters will never pay those prices because of how early they have to leave their homes to get to work. Bus prices in Britain are so absolutely ridiculous that for families travelling, it is cheaper to get cabs then ride the bus when you have 3 or more and that shouldn't be the case.

Now let's move on to today's pressing topic - today's strike.

Our capital city London is facing a two day strike with reduced services across the board. There have been multiple train strikes which have had little impact and some of you might feel that this is just another strike that won't do anything and this is just adding stress and annoyance to your daily commute and I can see those points, when I was effected by all these strikes and especially the changes that where happening during the reconstruction of London Bridge station, it seems that these actions are unnecessary but if nothing is done then nothing will be achieved. The RMT says it has concerns over safety and job losses due to Southern plans to bring in driver-only-operated trains and industrial action is about putting the safety and security of the travelling public before the profits of private companies and this is the right thing to do. I support these strikes and I believe that everyone deserves a safe working environment
